Well, I'm writing this as the Jags at Pats game is just starting the fourth quarter, Pats up 28-17.  I have no doubt of the outcome of this game, the Pats will win.  It's not because of lack of effort by the Jags offense, they're actually playing pretty well.  The problem is that the Jags defense is playing scared.  For the last few years the Jags have complained consistently that they "get no respect" yet here they are on the national stage with the chance to earn respect and all they do on defense is let the Patriots dictate what they do.  Now I'm not saying this is the fault of the players, I have no doubt the players want to play all out.  I'm laying this wimpy performance squarely at the feet of the coaches. Well, that's it, the Panthers season is over.  Pretty much, the season was over already, as they basically had to win out and they had shown no signs of being able to do that.  Today we had a different QB but basically the same result.  I guess it's time to start talking about what's wrong with this team and what can we do about it next year. I'm going to do something different this week.  I've been trying to do little writeups about the various games but have decided that I just don't have enough time to do the actual analysis that I had hoped so this week, I'll talk a little about the Panthers pitiful performance at Washington, and then I'll introduce a new feature, the Sightler NFL Power Poll.  Yes, there are already plenty of power polls, but I figure, why not one more?  Feel free to add comments to try to get me to move your favorite team up in the poll. It's hard to believe there are only six weeks left in the NFL regular season.  Things are definitely starting to get interesting and some teams seem to be making their moves to get a good push into the playoffs, while others seem like the wheels are falling off.  It should be a great home stretch. Yet another crazy weekend in the NFL, home teams and favorites would not have been a good bet this weekend.  Fortunately the Panthers bucked that trend.  Unfortunately, I had to work this weekend and didn't get to watch as much football as normal so my comments will likely be sparse this week.  Still, I'll give it a go. First of all, sorry about not getting my normal Tuesday Morning Madness column posted this week.  The Panthers were off this week so I guess my interest level wasn't quite as high as normal, and work was a little crazy this week, so I just didn't get anything posted.  I do have a few observations that I'll try to get up in the next day or two.

Also, if you've been here before you'll notice that I've renamed the blog and also changed the theme.  This was at the suggestion of a co-worker (Ken) who came up with the idea because he said it seem like everytime he asks me something like "where were you at when you did that?" the answer is always "In my recliner".  A typical day might be something like this: Continue reading "Some Updates..."

Not a great week for me with regard to football.  The Gamecocks played OK at Tennesee but lost, and it was pretty obvious they were simply not as good as the Vols.  Not a suprise or anything, but just not very exciting.  Of course it was the Panthers that really layed down this week.  They played OK for about 50 minutes of the game against Dallas, not great, but OK.  Unfortunately it's a 60 minute game, and boy did they play bad for those last 10 minutes.  Oh well, here we go... If anyone wasn't aware how important a good kicker is you your team, this weekend should have cleared that up for you.  Wow, two big wins with two 50+yd FG's, and a split-second away from a third (the refs were nice to Cowher and gave him a timeout on a play that would have been a 56 yarder, he might have got it called in time, but it was close).  Here we go... Wow, another completely wacky week in the NFL.  Winless teams seemed to get a boost this week, well, except for the Raiders.  Actually, maybe the Raiders got a boost too, they're just so bad they still lost.  I can't even remember the last time I've seen a team in such total disarray in the NFL, maybe the 1-15 Panthers, but even that year I don't remember seeing so many individuals who had cashed in.  Let's get to it. For weeks the media has been practically drooling over the Ravens and the pickup of McNair.  It seemed like article after article was written talking about the great presense McNair brings and how much he had "stabilized" the offense for the Ravens.  They were 4-0 after all and there was no way that they could be that good without McNair, he was the difference.  Well, I like McNair, but I still wondered if the bobbleheads were even watching the games.  No one seemed to pay any attention to the fact that, other than the 27-0 pounding of the Bucs in week one, the other games were fairly non-impressive wins against sub-par NFL teams.  Finally, the Ravens loose a game this week to the Broncos, an actual good team, and manage a measly 3 points, and now bobbleheads everywhere are questioning the Ravens, and in some cases even McNair. Well, it's only the second week of my hopefully weekly NFL writeup and I'm already a day late.  For those that know me, a day late isn't all that bad.  Anyway, if Peter King can have a Tuesday Edition of his Monday Morning Quaterback column, then why can't I have a Tuesday Edition?

I'm watching the Panthers at Saints.  It's under two minutes with the Saints backed up to their own 5 yard line.  Julius Peppers runs a great stunt and gets pressure right up the middle.  Drew Brees makes a nice play and completes a pass of a jumping Peppers.  Peppers runs into him, grabbing him around the head.  He does not club him in the head, although he does wrap his arms around his head.  It was obvious Peppers let up, and neither player even fell down.  Brees casually watched the play and then turned around to see the yellow flag coming out.  The penalty, illegal blow to the head.
